"Hidden Spaces"
Earthen Nooks & Garden Benches

Learn how to build your own "Hidden Space" out of earth.
Using local, sustainable and recycled building materials,
discover how to redefine your environment with outdoor nooks and benches that convey intimacy, seclusion and safety.

During this 2 part, cob workshop, participants will learn
basic natural building methods, including how to construct: foundations, walls, benches, arches, windows and simple living roofs.
We will also explore decorative and sculptural earthen plasters.
There will be lunch break discussions on visual aesthetics and natural design principles, while eating fresh baked breads, pizzas
and goodies made in an actual wood-fired, earth oven.

The Hidden Spaces workshop will be held at The Olmo Farm.
Voted the best sunset in Davis, this private farm and vineyard is an ideal setting for any workshop. Enjoy a peaceful and
grounding experience as we build on this picturesque landscape together.

Cob Building Workshops
Learn how to use "cob" building techniques to create hand-sculpted benches, walls, ovens and art for the garden or patio.

Cob is a natural building material that has been used to construct homes throughout the world for centuries. An earthen mixture
of clay/soil, sand and straw, cob is extremely strong and durable. It does not rot or burn and if properly protected, cob will last
indefinitely. Since cob is made with clay/soil, it is a very malleable material to build with and can be shaped into any form
imagined. This allows you to create beautiful, hand-sculpted walls, benches, ovens, fireplaces, etc.

During our workshops, participants can expect to learn all you need to know about the cob building process; from finding raw
materials to applying protective earthen plasters. The workshops are labor intensive, giving you ample "hands on"  build
experience. We will also spend time discussing foundations and natural design principles. A great introduction to natural building,
these workshops will leave you with the skills and confidence to start building your own cob project.
